Hannibal is a piece of shit with no feelings and murderous tendencies, and no amount of fandom humanisation can change that.

I love it.

Hannibal feels everything. If he felt nothing why would he bother listening to and playing classical music, why would he desperately attempt to form bonds with other people?

The reason why he and Will have this intense relationship is because Hannibal is as empathic and Will is, it just so happens hannibal has complete control. And that is why Will is drawn to him, and drawn to empathising with him.

Hannibal has a love for everything and nearly all the characters in his life. He loves Alana, her passion, palette and her patience, he loves Jack’s intelligence, his drive and his sense he will do whatever needs to be done, he loves Bella’s ethical views, her philosophical opinions and how she deals with her end (he cries when she dies.) he loves Abigail’s innate manipulative qualities and her adaptability. He loves Chiyoh because she is constant and unmoving. He loves Dolarhyde because he elevated life and death to art.

He’s a dick, don’t get me wrong. He is the devil (and in this sense attempts at humanisation are flawed, no one tries to do that because he blatantly isn’t human.) and one of the most evil characters in modern fiction.

But the idea he feels nothing is wrong, and that plus not thinking he’s the bad guy aren’t mutually exclusive.

Hannibal as a show forces you to think beyond our mundane and emotionally limiting lives and into something new and infinitely more complex.

Except Hannibal IS human. Humans have the capacity to kill and eat people. Hannibal is immoral and unethical and a criminal. And no less human because of it.

In terms of what hannibal is physically able to do, he is inhuman.

He can win in fights where he is ridiculously outnumbered. He never tires (think about everything he gets done. He doesn’t have enough hours in the day) he can travel great distances in impossible periods of time, also, part of his hypnotic and manipulative abilities aren’t built or shown as human abilities.

Fuller said this show is built on emotional logic, not actual logic and physics. Hannibal is a huge part of that.

He’s not supernatural at all, but it’s more than us in this world. That’s why Mikkelsen describes him as a fallen angel. I.e Inhuman.

I suspect Hannibal would describe himself as more human than human. Extra-human. Free of the constraints of ordinary morality and considerations of god.
